You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
-Deuteronomy 11:18-19
We just recently started a book with Maddie called Big Truth's for Little Kids. It's a catechism type book intended for teaching God's truth to younger preschool age kids. Every day includes five questions and a story to emphasize those question points. Then it concludes with prayer - praising God for His attributes and praying that we would glorify Him in everything. The first three questions we're working on the past few days...
1. Who made you? A: God
2. What else did God make? A: God made all things
3. Why did God make all things? A: To bring Him glory
The idea is that the children actually memorize the answers in a catechism type manner so that these truths become apart of them. There are verses to memorize as well. She loves it so far and even Ellie listens to the stories.
Another book that I have yet to buy (just borrowed it from a friend) but is on my list to get because it was so good is Femine Appeal. This is written by Carolyn Mahaney, the mom of the girls who all run the girltalk blog. It gave me a needed boost of encouragment in the honor of working at home, the delight in loving my husband and the safety of self-control as well as all the rest of the topics. The chapters are the 7 qualities listed in Titus 2. Great book with amazing instruction and encouragment. A very easy read as well...good for me who has limited amount of reading time!
One thing that some friends, the Feminine Appeal book, and of course my husband have recently helped me with is getting together a routine and trying to diligently stick with it. (I figure now is the time to get this down or at least make an attempt to really practice being organized...I hear it gets harder as they get older!) So I've designed a routine for each of the girls and I and I've even divided up household tasks for each day and week. Troy is going to help me get it together in one place and I'll share it with you soon. Another thing that has been super helpful is making an actual breakfast, lunch and dinner menu for the week. Then whatever day it is I can just look at the list and know what's for dinner and have all the ingredients on hand. It has really inspired me up to try some new recipes. Since I'm not just aimlessly buying groceries, I feel the freedom to buy that expensive ingredient or specialty item to make one of the new dishes.
Thank you soooo much for this book idea! It's sounds perfect for us. I love the idea of them memorizing things. I will probably get it, and maybe post a note on my blog once we get going... :)
ReplyDeleteErin, I have been trying to do the same thing as far as planning meals, and making a schedule to follow for chores around the house. I think once I get it all set up it will be a lot easier, it's just getting the schedule all together that's the hard part. I have a friend that plans all her meals a month in advance, so she always has the right ingredients on hand. That's who I got the idea from. I made up a master list of all the meals we like, and then when I plan out meals I look at the list to see what I feel like making that week. I'm hoping it'll help deter my temptation for takeout too! Anyway I can't wait to see when you share the routine you've made up.
